Lost Your Momentum? Here’s How to Get It Back

We’ve all been there.

You had a plan. The fire was lit. For a little while, you were doing all the work. You woke up early. You were focused and disciplined. Things were moving in the right direction.

Then… life happened.

Maybe it was a bad week. A sick kid. A stressful job change. A health scare. Maybe it wasn’t anything big, just the slow drift of distraction, disorganization, or burnout.

Suddenly, the momentum you worked so hard to build was gone. You fell behind on your goals. You avoided your calendar. And the worst part? You felt like you had failed.

Here’s the truth:

You did not fail. You paused.

Now you can hit reset.

Let’s talk about what that looks like—without shame, without hype, and without needing some perfect morning routine to get back in the game.


First, Let’s Reframe the Slip

This isn’t about perfection. Life is not a linear journey, and progress never happens in a straight line. Setbacks are not signs of failure. They are signs that you’re human—and still in the fight.

In fact, one of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make is this:

Falling off track doesn’t say anything about your ability to succeed. It says something about your capacity to restart.

And that’s a skill worth building.


The 5-Part Reset Framework

When high achievers, like you, hit a wall, there has to be a way to pull yourself out of the rut and get back on track.  These are five steps that we can use to reset momentum without beating ourselves up or burning ourselves out.


1. Own It, Don’t Overthink It

There’s no need for drama here.

You slipped. That’s it. You don’t need to justify it or spiral into self-judgment. You don’t need to rewrite your whole life or start over next Monday.

Just take 60 seconds to acknowledge it:
“I got off track. I’m getting back on.”

Done.

Momentum doesn’t come from rumination. It comes from action. And ownership is the first move.


2. Reconnect with Your Why

The second move? Go back to the reason this mattered in the first place.

Why did you start this journey?

  • Was it for your health?
  • Your kids?
  • A business idea that lights you up?
  • A future version of you that deserves better?

It’s easy to forget our why when we’re deep in the weeds of busy days and long to-do lists. But reconnecting to that original purpose is like flipping the switch back on.

Take five quiet minutes. Sit with it. Write it down. Let the reason hit you again—and let it guide what you do next.


3. Set a Micro-Goal

Here’s the trap we fall into:
When we lose momentum, we feel like we have to “make up for it” by doing everything at once.

Don’t do that.

Instead, choose one small, meaningful goal you can hit today. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.

  • Go for a 20-minute walk.
  • Open Microsoft Word and write the first sentence.
  • Reach out to one potential client.
  • Drink the water. Skip the drive-thru. Set the alarm.

Success is built on small wins, stacked daily.
This isn’t about intensity. It’s about consistency.


4. Eliminate One Distraction

We talk a lot about motivation. But you know what derails more people than anything else?

Distraction.

We have good intentions… but the phone pings. The inbox grows. Netflix is calling. And suddenly, your brain is fried, and your goals are buried under dopamine hits.

Instead of trying to remove every distraction in your life, just pick one.

  • Delete the app (you know the one).
  • Turn off notifications for 24 hours.
  • Put your phone in the other room for one focused hour.

You don’t have to go full monk mode. Just create a little quiet so your focus can breathe again.


5. Build in Accountability

This one is non-negotiable.

When you’re rebuilding momentum, don’t try to do it alone. You need a voice outside your own head—someone who will challenge you, support you, and remind you of your goals when the fog rolls in.

This could be:

  • A coach (hi 👋)
  • A friend with similar goals
  • A journal you check in with daily
  • A whiteboard on your wall with your next three steps

Don’t make it complicated. Just make it visible. Momentum loves clarity—and accountability creates clarity fast.


The 130 Mindset

If you’ve read my story, you know where the name 130 Coaching comes from.

That number represents the season in my life when I showed up with relentless discipline, purpose, and hunger. It was a time when I didn’t just talk about what I wanted—I got up every day and worked for it.

I’ve also lived through seasons where I coasted. Where I relied on talent instead of discipline. Where I got distracted, made excuses, and lost momentum.

Final Thought: You’re Closer Than You Think

Here’s the part we forget when we fall off track:

Momentum is easier to rebuild than it is to create.

You already started once. You have already proved to yourself that you care, that you’re capable, and that you’re willing.

Don’t wait for the stars to align.

Hit reset today.

Even if it’s just one tiny action. Even if you’re not sure where it will lead. Even if you don’t feel ready.

Because sometimes the very act of restarting… is the win.
